WHAT TO WEAR

The #1 question I usually get from clients after they book their session is, "What should I wear?". I've created this page for you all to have as guide when putting together your outfit (s) for your photo session with me! These tips will help you create the perfect outfit for your photos!

When putting together outfits, consider why you are getting the photos taken. Are you celebrating a new life coming into the family? For example, this couple in the image to the left booked a Maternity Session to celebrate their new baby that was coming soon! So just remember what the photos are for, and what you would like the "mood" of the photos to be.

When choosing outfit colors for your session, coordinate instead of match. Instead of having everyone wear the same color and match, for example in the image of the family to the right, the daughter has a floral print blouse which was the focal point. Then you pull colors from that for each member of your family. And as important as it is to keep the colors cohesive, it's important to keep the style cohesive too. So no wearing graphic tees when everyone else is wearing their Sunday best!

I LOVE patterns! But just be careful how you use them when picking out your outfits. This is definitely not the time to pattern clash. Pick subtle patterns that won't clash with you or your background/location. Or pick one patterned item and coordinate the rest of the outfits based off the pattern colors. This couple in the image to the left did a great job! She's wearing an adorable blue and white striped dress, and he chose the white from her dress for his shirt!

Also think about where your photo session is taking place and choose colors that will compliment that background. If your background is darker (like a wooded forest), wear lighter colors. Wear darker colors against brighter backdrops like snow or like the Sand Dunes in the image to the right. She wore a black flowy gown, and he is wearing black pants and tie to compliment as well. And think about the "mood" of the photo. If your photos are being taken on a beach you would want to wear flowy sundresses. Or if you want more of an urban vibe in a city like setting like Downtown Salt Lake City, you would want to wear jeans, beanies, and tees.

Having photos taken at an outdoor location is so much fun! Just remember to dress for the weather. In the Winter you would want to wear cozy cute sweaters, beanies, scarves, and coats that coordinate with the color scheme of your outfits. In the summer you would want to wear loose fitting clothing that would keep you cool during the session. Layers are a good idea as well because you have the option to throw on a cute jacket if it starts to get a little chilly at your session! It's important to consider the weather when choosing outfits because if you're too hot or too cold, you'll be uncomfortable. Imagine shivering your whole session because you're too cold and trying to smile!

Layers can add a some "pops" to your photos. And patterns are great back ups to have in case the temperature fluctuates at your photo session. Layers also add texture to your outfit. Especially when it comes to black and white photos, or a more muted color scheme. It'll keep things beautiful, interesting, and add some "pop" both color and black and white photos. In the image to the right, shes wearing a textured white top with a corduroy black jumpsuit which gives an awesome contrast in both color and black and white photos!

It can be a lot of fun to play around with using props in your photos! Props can help reflect your personalities and make your photos memorable and unique! A prop can be anything like a simple bouquet of flowers, your child's favorite stuffed animal, or something sentimental that represents you or your passions. In the image to the left, this couple love to play music together, so we used their musical instruments as props! Don't go overboard with the props though. We still want YOU to be the main focus of the photos!
